How to configure a Linksys WPS54G wireless print server with Vista 64-bit

Here's how I finally got it to work after several hours of trial and error.

My Hardware:
WRT54G router, WPS54G PS, Windows Vista 64-bit, HP PSC 1600 series Vista print driver (HP driver won't install)

1. Connect ethernet cable to router (not print server)
2. In the browser, go to 192.168.1.1
3. no username, password = admin
4. Set Static DNS 1 to: 192.168.2.10  (for example, and NOT the Local IP Address), save settings
5. Ensure ethernet cable is connected to PS and USB cable to printer
6. Hold PS reset button, release, and settings page should print
7. Note the IP address. It should be 192.168.x.x  Mine was 192.168.1.102  (Not sure what 192.168.2.10 did, but this worked.  Before I set the 192.168.2.10 in the router, the PS settings page showed an IP of 169.254.53.156 which didn't work at all)
8. Go to Printers > Add a Printer > Add a Network, Wireless or Bluetooth Printer
9. Click: The printer that I want isn't listed.
10. Add a printer using TCP/IP printer or host name
11. Device type: TCP/IP device and enter IP address from printed page (should be a router address like 192.168.1.102)
12. Click Next  (when this wasn't working for me it took a long time to get to the next screen)
13. Click Custom and then Settings
14. Choose LPR radio button and Queue Name is LP (for PSC 1600, could be HP, L1, L2 - I couldn't verify for the PSC 1600.  I finally got lucky when I got the IP address right)
15. Click next and choose your driver
16. Click next and name your printer.  (I kept a separate printer setup for this printer for when I need to directly connect i.e. scanning)
17. Click Finish.  Don't print a test page here because you're not done yet.
18. Go to Printers and right-mouse click on the new printer
19. Choose: Run as administrator > properties
20. Click Continue
21. Click Ports tab and uncheck the box to Enable bidirectional support
22. In the Advanced tab, I chose: Start printing immediately (I read a thread that said spooling is required for MS products. I printed one doc with no problem. I haven't tested with a queue of docs yet. If you have a problem, I would play with this setting.)
23. Click OK to finish
24. Right-mouse click printer and choose Print Online

I think the IP address of the print server was the key to success for me. Every thread I read said to set it directly on the PS.  It worked for me (magicly) by applying the setting the "Static DNS 1" to 192.168.2.10

I couldn't have figured all of this out without the contributions of all the other helpful people on the Linksys forum.  Now, if Linksys could just post a utility that would make this work more easily, we'd all be happy!

Sometimes my laptop loses the wireless connection to the wireless print server. If that happens, hold the reset button for about 5 seconds and release. The printer will print a settings report including the IP address. Edit the Printer properties and update the IP address if it changed.
