I wasted many hours over three days configuring the wireless Klipsch RSB-14 soundbar and sub-woofer with the RW-1 rear speakers. This could have been avoided if Klipsch offered one simple instruction - DO NOT press the SUR (surround sound) button on the remote!
The SUR button is only used when you want to simulate surround sound using only the soundbar and sub-woofer. When you configure two RW1 rear speakers with the soundbar and sub-woofer, you now have a true surround sound set of 4 speakers. As long as the SUR light is off on the soundbar, you will hear sound out of the rear speakers.
Here are the steps I followed:
- The soundbar recognizes the subwoofer automatically when you turn it on.You must update the firmware on all new speakers: soundbar, sub-woofer and rear speakers. You can only update the soundbar firmware using a flash drive with nothing but the two files on it. Firmware is updated on the subwoofer and RW-1 speakers using the app on your mobile device. The firmware update app is different from the Klipsch Stream app.
- IMPORTANT: All speakers must be connected to the same wifi network as your mobile device. Turn OFF the advanced setting on your mobile device that changes to cell signal when wifi signal is lost.
- Once the firmware is updated, you can begin to configure your wireless speakers. Start with the soundbar. Push and hold the wifi button on the back. Release the button after you hear the second tone. Use the app to search for soundbar/subwoofer.From the Klipsch Stream app, choose the Setup icon (wheel) in the upper right and choose: Set Up Play-Fi Device. You might have to try a few times. Name it i.e. Soundbar and Subwoofer or Front Speakers.
- Plug in the first RW-1. Follow the same procedure as Step 3. Name it Left Rear, for example.
- Plug in the second RW-1. Follow the same procedure as Step 3. Name it Right Rear, for example.
- You're ready to configure Surround Sound. Choose the Setup wheel icon and select Surround Sound.
- Pair the rear speakers. Indicate which is front, left and right, respectively. Indicate the distance from the front to where you will be seated. Indicated the distance from the front to the rear speaker, respectively.
- Complete the pairing step. You will see the diagram of the speakers configuring themselves.
- Last step: Edit the sound level of the rear speakers on a scale of 1-10 relative to the sound level of the front speakers. Do this by editing the Surround Sound group. Then click the Edit button for the Relative Volume of the rear speakers. The default is 0. If you don't increase this, you might not hear anything from the rear speakers.
- Test your setup using a movie that is likely to output sound to the rear speakers i.e. Star Wars Return of the Jedi. The house will shake and the sound is impressive!
If you don't hear any sound from the rear speakers, remember to check that the SUR light is OFF on the sound bar. This is the fake surround sound button for use with the soundbar and sub-woofer without rear speakers.
NETGEAR WIFI EXTENDERS
I also use one Netgear Wifi Extender AC1200 at one end of the first floor and a Netgear Wifi Extender AC1900 in the living room where the Klipsch speakers are setup. They need a strong signal. My broadband modem is on the second floor not near the speakers. Even with the strong signal, I still have to search for the speakers several times sometimes before the Klipsch Stream mobile app finds the speaker during setup. Don't give up. Keep searching and the mobile app will eventually find the speaker.
